The Store at Kekerengu is an ideal place to rest awhile and enjoy nature's heritage - it's around 40 minutes drive from either Kaikoura or Blenheim. And at a scenic point on the coastal highway, this is where you can enjoy some of the region's finest cuisine. Judged Best Cafe in Marlborough Region, The Store at Kekerengu is a very special place.
There's a cafe style or a la carte menu, a range of coffees and teas, superb wines from the Marlborough region as well as other New Zealand wines and beers.
The expansive views from The Store compliment your dining experience. The vast Pacific Ocean is almost at your table as you feast on specialties of the land and sea including the local delicacy crayfish (lobster).
On winter days you can enjoy the ocean's moods as you dine by the open hearth fires. On warm summer days you can relax on the wide sun ducks or enjoy exploring the beaches directly from the restaurant.
The setting is truly memorable for a group function, wedding or other celebration, with indoor and outdoor dining, smorgasbord, special menus or barbeques. Experience the unique ambience and warm hospitality which make The Store such a special place.
As well as fine dining, The Store includes a shop and postal centre as well as a range of unique crafts from around the world. There is plenty of parking including areas for coaches and motorhomes. Toilets include disabled facilities.

What fantastic service from such happy people who clearly love creating, preparing and serving others, and ensuring you have an enjoyable time while you breath in the coastal ambience (literally and figuratively). Thank you so much for making the trip from CHCH to Picton always short and pleasant!
What a let down when with the food arrived. I selected 3 x Chicken & Camembert pies, 3 Flat white coffees and a soft drink.....out of pocket by $46. $8 for a pie that was reheated in a microwave resulted in soggy pastry. Yet another greedy NZ retailer. I chose to holiday in NZ to support the south islanders after the Earth Quake. It's a shame such a nice place can serve microwave heated food at such a high price. NZ should be encourageing tourists back into the country not driving them away with rip off prices.
Had lovely meal there today. Can recommend the food as it is worth the bit extra.
Biggest piece of carrot cake ever and absolutely scrumptious!!
Worth stopping even for the view.
Truly fabulous place to stop, great facilities, lots of space, excellent outdoor dining area. We just had lunch food from the cabinets, which was fine (good rather than excellent): the a la carte meals looked great, but we didn't have time. Cheerful staff, but one item we needed heated up was forgotten: we had to go back to the counter after 5 or 6 min and ask for it. What was really surprising was the tray: an old wooden thing all chipped at the edges, and really dirty. They must never wash them: the wooden surface was black with grease that was so caked on you could have scraped it off with a fingernail.
Summary: a really fabulous location, great facilities, but lunch-stop clients perhaps taken for granted a bit.
This cafe has a sublime style of understated rustic elegance. A stand out stop which we stumbled upon while touring the coast. Those Kiwi's have a knack for eye candy dessert and entres. Here they taste even better than they look. I'm talkin to you lemon bar. This is the kind of place we imagine running someday. But we're better off being the guest. Thanks for creating a friendly relaxing spot.
A scenic drive up the coast from Kaikoura to enjoy a leisurely lunch with family/friends. My overseas guests were very impressed with the coastal views from this restaurant and the great ambiance. We had a good variety of choices for lunch - blackboard menu or baimarie. The lasagnes, quiche , and cakes on display were impossible to resist. We also ordered fish & chips, which had a light crisp batter. The good old kiwi pie was also ordered. These had meaty, flavoursome fillings with a firm pastry. Yum. There were 8 of us and all our meals came together and at a perfect temperature. Our waitress was very attentive. She organised our dessert (cakes) to be cut in half so we were able to share. My favourite was the creamy cheesecake. Our coffees were expertly prepared.
To walk down the steps and beachcomb after our meal was a highlight. Though my shopaholic friends thought the gifts for sale in the restaurant were also a highlight.
The views from The Store are outstanding. The outdoor area is simply beautiful and sun-drenched. I can imagine it would be equally as nice in winter with the large open fireplace. We stopped in at The Store for lunch last week and I must say I really like the staff. For food we had the Fish & Chips and the salmon. Both were good. We finished with cakes and coffee, both of which were truly superb (the carrot cake and moist berry cake are to die for). This cafe/restaurant is a winner and if you are passing by I would highly recommend you call in...you'll see why it's so popular the moment you see the views. Make sure you save room for the cake!
