When the ambassador of Thailand comes to Napier and gives his unsolicited stamp of approval for authenticity in Thai food, then you know you’re getting the real McCoy! Chang, owner of the Thai Chef Restaurant in Taradale Road, was proud to receive such a prestigious award for the quality, preparation and presentation of the food on his menu.

“Last year the ambassador, Norachit Sinhaseni, came here and tried our food, and he said ‘okay that qualifies for an award’. Then he sent me the certificate,” says Chang. As well as certifying the “diversity and refinement of Thailand food,” the Thai Chef Restaurant was also granted the privilege of using the logo “Thailand’s Brand” – the symbol of authentic Thai food.

Adding extra flavour to the glowing achievement, Chang redecorated his restaurant like a palace in glittering gold, which looks superb against the royal blue tablecloths and rolling red carpet – fit for a king. Beautiful hand-carved teak furniture, surrounded by red and golden walls, makes the tasteful decor look good enough to eat!

Chang’s customers enjoy his food just as much as his teasingly wicked sense of humour, which is obvious in the way he has written the menu. For starters, he recommends the steamed half-shell mussels sautéed in soy garlic sauce, which is a great appetizer leading into “Spicy Girl” medium or hot main. It is described as “A hot little girl, stir fried with crispy pork belly and fresh seasoned vegetables!”

His favourite dessert is coconut mousse, with lychees and other Thai fruit salads, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with white chocolate sauce. Yum!

Lunch is served on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday and dinner is served every night of the week.
