Established in 1991 as the first country cafe in the Tasman district, the Jester House cafe has become a much loved coffee and lunch stop. Once you walk over the trip trop bridge past the tame eels you enter another world. The funtastic cafe garden is full of art and surprises.
The cafe is open daily in the summer season (October till April) from 9.00am until 5.00pm. In winter it's open Saturday and Sunday from 9.00am until 4.30pm.
We serve breakfast, lunch and inbetweens. There are delicious baked cakes, slices and scones. For lunch we have a blackboard menu, which is all fresh and homemade.
Specialties include our own hot smoked fish and platters to share. There's also food for kids.
A Nelson icon. The Jester House Cafe's playful garden setting is fun for the whole family.

We visited Jester House on the advice from some local friends while visiting the Nelson region. As soon as you arrive you know you are somewhere special with the beautiful gardens and magical setting.. The outdoor tables are perfect in summer with plenty of things to keep the kids busy while the adults take in the scene over a nice local beer or wine. The small but mouth watering menu contains delights such as smoked salmon potato cakes, smoked fish sandwiches and wild pork burgers - all highly reommended! Jester House is very easy to get to, being down the scenic route just a few minutes off the main highway.. A must-see if you are in Nelson, especially if you have kids!
Perfect place for a family luncheon. Charming, relaxed atmosphere. Grandchild enjoyed playground whilst adults had great coffee and chai before meal. I can highly recommend the Beef and Ale Pie. The pastry was light and crisp and the beef tasted delicous. It was served with mash and light salad.
The service was very friendly and informative. A delightful experience.
Jester House is a fantastic spot to call in to for breakfast, brunch or lunch. The atmosphere is second to none on a sunny Nelson day. The gardens are lush and beautiful with an interesting array of art. There's also a kids playground area, complete with a sandpit and a giant chess set....very handy if the adults want to relax while the kids entertain themselves. The tame eels are really something to see. When we visited Jester House on Sunday for lunch I had the smoked fish open sandwich while my husband had the wild pork burger, both were delicious. Highly recommended cafe for the Nelson/Tasman region!!
