With all these awards it's no wonder the locals flock to this bistro right opposite the Arts Centre. Before you even start reading the menu, the extensive beverage list is sure to impress. Cook'n With Gas has wide variety of wine available from it's cellar. The wines are sourced from all the best wine producing areas of New Zealand and there is also French champagne for those special evenings. The beer list is a huge full 4 pages long, comprising of a wide range of both international and New Zealand beers.

The restaurant is housed in a 1896 four-room villa listed as a heritage building. While the setting is comfortable and informal, very much inline with a typical French bistro, the menu itself is a food lovers dream. The portions are generous and the contemporary cuisine outstanding in flavour, ingredients and presentation.

Having heard a lot of positive praises for Cook'n With Gas, I thought it was about time I checked it out for myself. Normally with a restaurant so hyped up by friends I find that I am somewhat disappointed once I visit them, however Cook'n With Gas is everything it's cracked up to be and more!
The staff are absolutely fantastic. Outstanding even! We had just but reached the door when it was swung open by a friendly staff member with a warm welcome. So from the first moment we were impressed and I can tell you that the incredibly high standard of service was maintained through out the night. The staff were polite and relaxed, and offered some good suggestions in both the wine and food menus.
The restaurant has such a nice relaxed feel with an eclectic array of things on the walls. Luckily we had booked a table because no longer than half an hour after we had arrived the entire restaurant was full!
Now on the food. Outstandingly delicious!! I started with the gingered duck, while my partner had the carpaccio of ling & scallop. Both were absolutely divine. For mains, I had roast belly of pork, an extremely popular choice according to our waiter, and I can see why. The pork was succulent, and the presentation was great. It even came with 2 delicious strips of crackling balanced on top and a buttery garlic mash. YUM! My husband immensely enjoyed his main of turkey. The meal was complimented by a beautiful Central Otago Rose. Our dining experience didn't stop there because we next ordered up a scrumptious desert wine and finished our dining experience by sharing the crepes. Which were wonderful, of course.
It was quite simply a perfect night out! If you are in Christchurch and looking for a special restaurant to dine at then you can't go past Cook'n With Gas. Just make sure you book!
