Sparky's Backpackers is a new hostel in Invercargill, Southland NZ. We're small in size but big on atmosphere. Our theme is 'Railways,' as Sparky was once a train manager on the NZR Southerner.

We've secured props from the movie "The World's Fastest Indian," starring Anthony Hopkins. The film was shot on location both here in Invercargill and on the salt flats in Utah, USA.

We offer you the thrill of speed and the passion of a man who wanted to push himself and his machine beyond the impossible. You can view the movie for free at night, and if the night is fine we'll have a chin wag and sing along around our bonfire in the backyard. Bring your instruments!

Features and facilities include:

  • Clean, comfy made-up beds
  • Internet, laundry, and free hot drinks
  • Free continental breakfast (Weetbix or cornflakes, toast, tea or coffee)
  • Off-street parking
  • An easy walk to the city centre
  • Access to shops, swimming pool, and Southland Museum / Art Gallery
  • The Dunedin Bus stops at our gate
  • Bookings for Stewart Island with pick up and drop off at our gate
  • Warm, friendly home away from home

Not sure what to say? Here's some ideas to get you started... helpful/friendly staff, clean and tidy, comfortable, location, cool features/facilities, lumpy bed?, value for money, would you stay again?

It's obvious that Sparky cares about his guests and wants us to have a great time. He put in a hot tub last year and went into debt to do it, which shows how dedicated he is to making this place an enjoyable experience for his guests. If you're lucky you can work 3 hours a day in exchange for accommodation (not enough work for tons of folks). That's what I'm doing and he's a great host! The work isn't hard; he just wants us to get stuff done, which is totally fair. I recommend Sparky's Backpackers as a hostel stay or as an extended work-trade (I paid for my first night, then worked out a deal). It's a nice break from the larger, impersonal hostels.
