The Wellington Cable Car is one of Wellington’s oldest & most popular tourist attractions. The cars run from Lambton Quay in the heart of the central business district and within 5 minutes whisk you from under the corporate towers of The Terrace past Kelburn Park and Victoria University to the top entrance of the Wellington Botanic Gardens with its magnificent lookout over the City and harbour - Te Whanganui-a-Tara (The Great Harbour of Tara).
Other attractions immediately accessible from the top station are the award winning Cable Car museum situated in the old cable car winding room, the Carter observatory (Due to reopen July 2008) and the Skyline Restaurant.
For those wishing to explore further, Kelburn village with its shops and Cafes is a short walk and an ideal stopping off point on your way to Karori Wildlife Sanctuary.
There are also easy downhill walks through the Botanic Gardens to Thorndon or back to Lambton Quay via the historic Bolton Street Cemetery and the Beehive.

Comments / Reviews of Wellington Cable Car
Pick a sunny day and take a ride to the top on the cable car for some great views over Wellington and the waterfrint and harbour. Wander around the botanical gardens or pick up the free shuttle to Zealandia from the top. Small cafe, cable car museum (free entry) and toilets available at the summit.
The cable car is a must do in Wellington. Take the obligatory photo from the top and don't miss the free museum - well worth the money!! (we I hope it is still free.....)
Loved it, especially the sign in the cable car about loading capacity '30 persons seated 70 persons standing' and 'No dogs, radios, skates or bicycles'. Great value for money.
For only $2.50 you can ride the cable car from Lambton Quay up to the top of the botanic gardens. The views of Wellington city and the harbour are stunning from the top and well worth checking out. There's a really great walk through the botanic gardens back into the city (40 minutes down hill), which is well marked out (just follow the pink flowers). I would highly recommend this if you are visiting Wellington and it's a nice day.
