Set on 80 hectares of park-like grounds, Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand’s largest wildlife and conservation centre and only open range zoo. The Park has been developed as an open range sanctuary for endangered animals, providing them with enclosures as close to their natural habitat as possible. Streams, moats and banks are used as barriers to allow visitors the opportunity to see the animals in a natural manner. Over 400 animals from 70 different species are displayed.
There is plenty for visitors to enjoy at the Park with fifteen daily animal feeds, one feed approximately every 40 minutes whilst the Park is open!
Orana Wildlife Park specialises in getting visitors “up close and personal with the animals”. Some animal encounters are not offered anywhere else in the world! Hand feed a Giraffe! Meet White Rhinoceros in a face-to-face encounter! Watch a Cheetah sprint! , Pat a Llama!. Thrill seekers can participate in a wonderful experience, unique to the Park called the Lion Encounter Ride - ride on board our specially designed feeding wagon which travels with the Animal Keepers through the African Lion Reserve for close up views of these magnificent creatures feeding - a truly memorable experience!
An extensive collection of New Zealand native species is of particular appeal for visitors. Observe New Zealand Kiwi, Tuatara and a range of endangered, endemic birds such as Kea, the only alpine parrot in the world. Stroll through the walk-through aviary whilst native birds fly past and listen to their calls. A farmyard area enables visitors to pet a range of domestic animals.
Visitors can walk through the Park and/or ride on the complimentary Safari Shuttle, driven by a wildlife expert who provides a commentary. Alternatively, visitors may wish to participate in daily, guided, walkabout tours.
The Park is located within ten minutes drive of Christchurch International Airport and 25 minutes drive from the City centre. There is also a shuttle service with Sunshine Shuttles.
Open daily 10am - 5pm (closed Christmas Day)
Last entrance is 4:30pm

Comments / Reviews of Orana Willdlife Park
Large enclosures and happy animals! Just awesome for the family and educational too. We joined the guided walk with the Orana Park staff member which was really informative. There is a handout when you arrive with all the animal feeding times on it. Handing feeding the giraffes was so much fun for the kids. We also paid an extra fee for the Lion feed experience ($30) which I highly recommend to do. You enter the lion enclosure on the back of a caged truck and even though you are completely safe it is a little scary. The noise of lions is something else as they wait for the food. If you have boys they will really love it, mine are still talking about it.
