Mount Cheeseman is the second closest ski area to Christchurch. The ski field is a sunny east to south east basin with open rolling terrain. With great beginner and intermediate slopes, Mount Cheeseman is perfect for learners and families. Two T Bars give easy access to well groomed gentle terrain and the Learners Tow is located right beside the main lodge.

The grooming staff also make an awesome pipe and series of jumps in their terrain park.

Mt Cheeseman has two accommodation lodges. Snowline Lodge, right on the field, offers ski holiday packages including a bed, 3 meals, lift pass and lesson, whilst Forest Lodge, 6km down the access road in the beech forest, operates as a backpackers’ hostel on a bed-only basis with modern kitchen facilities. Ice-skating is available at Forest Lodge from late June/July, dependant on conditions. The laid-back, relaxed style of Mt Cheeseman makes it easy to join in with après-ski activities and enjoy every moment from sunrise to sunset.

The Mt Cheeseman turnoff is well labelled on the left, about 10km from the top of Porters Pass.

The access road is an unsealed road that crosses open tussock grassland leading to a pleasant drive through mountain beech forest and then continues up through high alpine terrain. A convenient unloading area is available right at the base area, with the main car park a short distance away.

Mt Cheeseman is a lovely sunny ski area only an hour and a half from Christchurch. It has nice wide open terrain which beginners and intermediates will love.

Cheeseman is a great club field to start off at if you are planning a few days in the Craigieburn area. It is the only clubbie in the area with T-bars rather than nutcrackers which will ease you slowly into the club field experience. For this reason it is perfect for families and those still gaining confidence on the snow.

From the first T-bar you can ride nice rolling terrain back to the base and with a bit of traversing manage some nice lines in the powder too. From the second T-bar you can hike along the ridge to the top of Mt Cockayne which provides those a bit more advanced with a great run down especially on a powder day. If you don't mind a bit of a hike there is plenty of terrain available for the adventurous and more experienced. The views are spectacular of Castle Hill basin and over the back to the Alps. There are quite a few little natural hits and lips to play around with which can keep you occupied for a while.

The cafe is pretty good with loads of seating both inside and out so that you can enjoy the sun. I would definitely recommend Cheeseman to those looking for a fun, cruisy day on the snow.
