Only 90 minutes drive from Christchurch is the stunning Hanmer Springs Themal Pools and Spa. This large outdoor complex is the perfect place all-year-round for a family day of fun, or a couple's romantic escape. Whether it's relaxing in the natural environment of the thermal pools, to splashing your way through some serious waterslide fun, this place caters for it all.
Visitors have been attracted to the beautiful high country area for over 125 years to soak in the thermal waters. Many find the thermal water, which is rich in minerals, a great relief for the pains of arthritis and similar ailments.
There are a variety of different pools to soak in whilst you enjoy the gorgeous backdrop of valleys and mountains. The 4 large rock pools are interconnected and minimumly treated, with a pleasant temperature of 38 degrees Celsius. The 3 sulphur pools are completely natural, giving the water a lovely silky feel (although be warned these pools have a rather strong smell). The temperature ranges from 40 - 42 degrees Celsius. The hexangonal pools are the pools that most will recognise who haven't been to the pools in many years. These large pools are very popular. There are private pools too that can be booked out for 1/2 - 1 hour periods.
Finally for the young or the young at heart, the family activity area and waterslides are excellent fun. The water like the other pools is heated, which means the kids can enjoy the waterfalls, animal slides and waterslides even in winter.
Other facilities at Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools include
25 metre freshwater heated pool
Towel & swimsuit hire
Disabled facilities including an aqualift and stainless steel wheelchair for our beach access pool
Picnic area and Cafe with bar facilities
Massage & Beauty facility offering packages that include; massage, sauna and facial options, as well as the energising and detoxifying benefits of the Pamper Packages and Body Wraps.

This is wonderful!
I have just moved to Nz from Australia and i highly reccommend a visit to Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools,so relaxing and spectacular destination, you will never know if you never go so get to the Hamner Springs Thermal Pools and see for yourself its beautiful :)
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools is a must visit in winter! Relax in a hot pool while the snow gently falls from above and make snow images on the pool edge while remaining toasty warm and relaxed. The worst part is getting out! A highlight of this beautiful quaint town! =)
We loved it. Lots of different settings with pools of varying temperature plus ordinary pools. A great selection. We enjoyed the waterslides and the bucket that fills and then tips on you while you're in the main pool. It's easy to stay there all day and the cafe has yummy food. Everything is well signposted and easy to find in the complex. We were there in summer and it was very pretty, but I'd love to go back in the winter and soak surrounded by snow. You can get a double entry pass for not much more than a single entry pass which was great - it let us break up our visit with other things to do in Hanmer - we went swimming from morning to late afternoon and then back in the evening for a 'free swim'. If we lived there we'd be there several times a week.
A beautiful relaxing destination. World class scenery and natural hot pools. A must see if you are in NZ. How can you be stressed when you are in Hanmer Springs
Such a great spot to relax and fantastic value for money (a mere $12 per adult at the time of writing this). I really enjoyed the HOT sulfur pools. The temperature was 40 and 41°C in these pools so we had to hop over to the cooler pools once and while for fear of overheating. The cooler pools are a lot larger and really nicely presented with rock surrounds. One thing that really impressed me was that upon arriving my husband and I noticed that a large group of primary school children (40 +) also arriving. We both exchanged looks of dread thinking our nice plan of soaking away stress could just have faded away but to the credit of the staff the school camp children were not allowed in a few of the pools...this complex is large and there was plenty of room for them and allowed us our peaceful pools too!
Great pool and nice scenic detour on the drive from Christchurch to Picton, was amazing there in the winter with snow around the hot pools all that was missing was a cold beer.. The pools are made to look like natural fomed pools with rocks/boulders around the outside. Very nice.. I like water slides and the ones here are kinda just for kids so thats why only 8/10 from me for Hanmer.. Very nice though..
